Things Fall Apart Between Obasanjo and Jonathan
There were strong indications on Wednesday night that President Goodluck Jonathan may call the bluff of the aggrieved governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and contest in 2015.
It was learnt that top forces in the Presidency are viewing with suspicion the peace moves by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo because the aggrieved governors are seen as Obasanjo's “die-hard” loyalists.
The peace meeting called by the ex-President is scheduled for Friday in Abuja but Jonathan, who reportedly got angry at a meeting with 10 PDP governors loyal to him on Tuesday night, asked them not to lose sleep over the antics of the Akitu group.
.
A source, who spoke with The NATION, said: “The President, after going through some security reports on the crisis, got angry and told the governors, ‘we will not lose sleep. Those who ignited the fire should go and quench it’.
“I think the Presidency may damn the consequences. The next few weeks might be for dirty politics. There is a likelihood of tit-for-tat politics.”
Obasanjo and the governors are trying to prevent Jonathan from contesting in 2015 because they believe he has not performed, but an aide to Jonathan said he has performed and must contest in 2015.
