7 Best Highlights Of Buhari’s Tenure So Far

It’s now about seven weeks since President Muhammadu Buhari became president and a lot has been said about his administration. Some people have criticised him for his slow pace and apparent indecision but he’s obviously impressed with some good actions.

Away from all the criticism, let’s look at something positive about the man. It’s still a long way to go for the president, but here are the seven best highlights of his tenure so far:

1. Firing service chiefs

In the past week, President Buhari unexpectedly fired all his service chiefs including the head of the army and he has gotten a lot of credit for it. People see it as a bold, overdue move in the right direction because the army and the rest of the forces clearly need some fresh ideas.

The sacked chiefs had been there for long and they failed to end the Boko Haram war. Surely they needed to go, and so people are just glad that Buhari seized the moment and showed them the door. It’s one of the best highlights of his tenure so far and it’s shown Nigerians that he’s working on the situation.

2. The relief for states

One of the first thing Buhari had to deal with was the fiscal crisis going on at the state level. Many states were broke and couldn’t pay their workers, and there was pressure on the president to intervene.

So the president held meetings with all the governors to work out a solution, and in the end the administration put together a relief plan worth N700 billion for the states so they can pay their debts and pay their workers. It was a considerate move and people hailed the president for weighing in.

3. He turns down new cars

Last week Punch reported that the president turned down new cars worth N400 million to save the government money. The report said they were going to buy five armoured cars for the president but he said he didn’t need them because the existing ones were enough. It was a top story last week and it really made a good impression on many people.

4. He announces pay cut

It looks like the president is really trying to reinforce his image as a prudent man. Last week he announced that he and his vice Yemi Osinbajo will cut their pay by half in order to reduce government spending.

The president actually can’t cut his own salary because there’s a government parastatal that’s in charge of setting and reviewing salaries for government officials including the president. But people liked his intention anyway and he got some commendation for it.

5. He meets BBOG activists

It’s over a year now since the Chibok girls were kidnapped and the movement that followed it has largely quietened. But there was renewed attention for the issue when the BBOG activists met the president in Aso Rock this month.

Former president Goodluck Jonathan never met these people because he believed they opposed him and were out to humiliate his government. He also didn’t do enough to try and rescue the girls despite the widespread outrage. So it was a good thing when President Buhari and his vice hosted these activists and promised that his government will treat their cause as priority. It’s one good highlight of the president’s tenure so far.

6. He handles legislative dispute well

The president had barely settled down when the APC legislators split over a power sharing deal. The infighting soon worsened so much that the lawmakers literally exchanged blows in the parliament. The president had had enough.

It was at that point he met the people and tried to mediate a settlement. He didn’t strong arm anyone into accepting what he wanted. He stayed neutral from the outset and only stepped in when things got to a head. Surely the president played it out well in that tricky situation.

7. He meets with regional leaders for Boko Haram

Buhari got right to work on the Boko Haram crisis immediately he became president. He organised meetings with presidents of the neighbouring countries and tried to strengthen the cooperation between these countries and Nigeria in the fight against the Boko Haram.

Now the Nigerian government spearheads a multinational force that will roll out in a few months, according to the presidential spokesman Femi Adesina.

The president made a good first impression by initiating talks with the regional leaders to make the fight against the terrorists more solid. The results haven’t really begun showing though, but it’s hoped that the president’s efforts will be productive and that things will look up very soon.
