Osinbajo made the promise after signing of an agreement with the United Kingdom on the use of solar energy to provide electricity to rural people.

Premium Times reports that the vice president Yemi Osinbajo signed the agreement on behalf of the federal government, while Grant Shapps, the UK Minister of State for International Development, signed it on behalf of the UK government.

Taking part in the event that was performed shortly after the launch of the Africa Energy Campaign initiated by the U.K. Department for International Development (DFID), Obasanjo stressed that Nigeria is committed to improve accessibility to power, especially solar power for the people.

According to Vanguard, the vice president announced that Nigeria would no longer watch as millions of its citizens find it difficult to access electricity.

“This is the time to jump in and we are all set to do that. This is very exciting for us and of cause Grant has been extremely supportive not only encouraging everyone and pushing and bolding everyone but I think that in providing all of the support and the various suppliers and all of the various people who have been working on solar power for so long.

“We are really excited to be here and I am sure that in the next one year when you hear about us it will be quite a story to tell.

“Nigeria will be the place where all of the example will be set for the rest of Africa. We are really looking forward to,” he said.

Obasanjo assured the English partners that the federal government of Nigeria would work closely with the DFID.

“With the cost of solar power 20 years ago, that would have been impossible; the combination of innovation in technology, the low cost of solar power has made this all the more possible.

“This is an incredible opportunity in Africa, especially Nigeria with over 96 million people who do not have access to power,” he said.

In his speech, Shapps said that many Africans did not have electricity in their homes and their children were unable to do their homework. He added that some people die of household pollution from use of kerosene and charcoal.

Stressing that such situation was totally unacceptable, the minister noted that the campaign needed a group of coalitions and alliances cutting across the business and political boundaries and people with technological capabilities and civil society movements to make it work.
