Mysterious fire outbreak hits popular Kano market, over 3000 shops destroyed (photos)

A mysterious fire outbreak has been reported at the Mohd Abubakar Rimi market, popularly known as Sabon Gari market, in Kano.

The incident which started at about 2am on Saturday, March 26, affected shops at A, B and C zones of the market that sells footwears. Immediate cause of the fire was attributed to a power transformer within the market.

The state’s commissioner of environment, Alhaji Ali Haruna Makoda has since announced the suspension of the monthly sanitation exercise to allow rescue efforts at the market.

Reports say the fire service personnel initially found it difficult to access the market because of the large number of shop owners and suspected hoodlums working to either salvage or loot goods.

Residents accused the fire fighters of arriving the scene almost five hours late, and not coming with enough water to stop the blaze.

More than 3,000 shops were destroyed by the inferno.
