Kayswitch: Here's why singer's album will not be released soon
Turns out, big brother D’banj is working on setting up the music industry’s publishing and distribution systems in order to make money from the album.
Kayswitch will not release an album until his big brother, D’banj’s content distribution systems are in place.
The singer has been ever-present at D’banj’s side, working closely with him at the defunct pop group Mo’Hits. He stayed loyal to D’banj, pitching tents with the pop star during the famous split. Four years down the line and the singer is yet to have a body of work to his name. His discography in that time only boasts of singles.
Pulse spoke to D’banj concerning the affair, and received revelations about why the singer’s album will not be released soon. Turns out, big brother D’banj is working on setting up the music industry’s publishing and distribution systems in order to make money from the album.
“You must make sure that the distribution platforms are properly in place. When I came back and I found out that the Industry has so changed. People just want to put out content for free. So there’s so much content coming out right now. There months, for months, and their lifespan is gone.” D’banj told Pulse.
“I’m thinking what’s in place for proper distribution, marketing, so that when we do this, our ROI comes back to us.
“There’s so many people distributing, so many aggregation companies, with no one publishing company, no one person helping us collect this. In the last one year, I have had to go back from the artiste part, into the executive part and say ‘let’s come from the back end, do we have physical distribution? How can we help? Even if it is 1 Naira it’s going to give us, let’s put that in.
“Just like crude oil, content is the new crude, and if not refined properly, to get to different by-products, to sell, to get returns, then why would you bring it out like that? At the end of the day, it will crash. That’s why you see people that market the song properly, and get it out there, and see its full lifespan, that’s longevity. Right now we need to put that in place.”
With the projected distribution system set to be built in the future, D’banj is assuring everyone that one completion, Kayswitch will have an album to his name. His first body of work in over 5 years of showmanship.
“But I can guarantee you that Kayswitch, who is one of the most talented people you and I know, I will drop an album for him.”D’banj declared. “But when you hear the money I am going to make from the album, you will know why I waited.”
D’banj has also taken a new route in managing his record label, DB Records.
The superstar’s record label has had a rocky 2016, losing two of their members. Actress-cum-singer Tonto Dikeh, announced her departure, before in-house producer, DeeVee split with the group in March. Tonto Dikeh later went on to say it was for ‘business’ reasons.
On a personal note, D’banj has been having a swell time. His single ‘Emergency’ has become a hit, and he has also headlined the Gidi Culture Festival, and was signed up as Host for MTV Base Lip Synce Battle reality TV show. All of these has influenced his decision to restructure the organization of his record label.
“Everybody is working, I have sent everybody out. Everybody go and work from your lungu (slang for house). It’s because a lot of people box you into a corner. Because I do a collaboration with you, doesn’t mean you are my artiste. Because I say I want to sign you as an artiste does not mean I am the one that is going to give you the hit. I am not a producer.
“My job here is to use my brand and my structure to make sure that whatever content you can give us is properly monetized and or properly managed. Immediately I found this sound (‘Emergency’) from different producers, that I never met, it was my decision to say ‘guys, I think it’s good for everybody to go and search your inner selves. We have what it takes right now, everybody is waiting for us, let’s get different things. Go and work with A, B, C….bring beat, put it in, let’s turn it into a hit, so that we can use this beat well.’
“At the end of the day, you can continue to try the same thing, and expect a different result. I have tested it with just one single, and I can gyarantee you that what we’ve done from January, sending everybody out to go and work, what you are going to get is going to be pure, authenticated…you are going to search, tap, partner, align, and get the hit out.
