GEJ in exile: List of countries where Jonathan might escape if coerced by Buhari
– Former president Goodluck Jonathan has reportedly gone into temporary exile in Côte De Ivoire
– Jonathan’s frequent absence in the country makes Nigerians think of him planning to escape Nigeria
According to latest media reports, the former president Goodluck Jonathan has gone into exile in Côte De Ivoire to avoid a possible arrest by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over corrupt activities during his administration.
Although his representatives deny the former leader’s escape, there is a list of countries that may provide shelter to Jonathan provided that he is forced out of the country:
– The United States of America
Last month the ex-president visited America, where he was awarded for promoting peace and democracy in Africa. He also met with Andrew Forrest, an Australian billionaire and the founder of the Walk Free Foundation (WFF), to discuss modern slavery in Africa and around the world.
– The United Kingdom
Earlier this month Goodluck Jonathan was spotted in London spending time with his son Ariwera and his daughter Aruabai, both reportedly live in the capital of the European country for some time.
– Kenya
Recall that last year the former head of the state accompanied by his wife and children visited Kenya. While the official aim of the trip was to watch wildebeest migration, Nigerians alleged that Jonathan had some hidden agenda.
– Côte d’Ivoire
Ivorian officials in Washington DC claim that Mr. Jonathan has been living in Abidjan, the Ivorian capital, for about two months but it’s unclear whether he has been granted political asylum there.

However, the Cote d’Ivoire government does not have any official position on Mr Jonathan’s presence in the country.
– Ecuador
According to some sources, Jonathan arrived Cote d’Ivoire from Ecuador two weeks ago.
While the situation remains unclear, Senator Nimi Bariagha Amange, a close associate of former president, has dismissed the unconfirmed reports.
He said Jonathan would have loved to be at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convention in Port Harcourt but had to visit his children in London. The former president will reportedly come back to Nigeria in the nearest future.
