Few days back the death of the Oba of Benin Omonoba Erediauwa was announced and the whole of Benin has been mourning the death of their king. His death was not only a great loss to Benin City but a national loss and the high chiefs were asked to shave their heads which was described as the tradition of the land.

Popular Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Mike Ozekhome is also a trained University lawyer and human rights activist. In 2014, Ozekhome is a native of Opkakafikifiki, Iviukwe, Agenoebode home, Edo state and was given the honor of the Enobakhare Ode of Benin by the late Oba of Benin.

According to News Nigeria, Ozekhome shared a picture of his neatly shaved head adding that: “We must respect our culture, customs and traditions. As theEnobakhare Ode of Benin Kingdom, a title personally bestowed on me in 2014 by the iconic and legendary Oba himself, I belong to the Egha vbo’nore league, the highest Council of Chiefs headed by the Iyase, with Esogban, Eson, Esama, et al, as high ranking members. So, it is a case of montre la lu’miere. Long live the great Benin Kingdom.”

Also reacting to the death of the king, President Muhammadu Buhari speaking through his spoke person Femi Adesina disclosed that: “On behalf of the Federal Government, President Buhari extends sincere condolences to Governor Adams Oshiomhole, the people of Benin Kingdom and Edo State on the passage of the beloved monarch who had ruled over his people since his ascension to the throne in 1979.

President Buhari assures them of the fullest sympathy and solidarity of the Federal Government and all Nigerians as they mourn Oba Erediauwa who will always be remembered as one of the most outstanding traditional rulers of his era.

As the late Oba goes to join his very illustrious royal ancestors, President Buhari believes that his place of honour in the history of the Benin Kingdom and Nigeria has been assured by his long and highly successful career as a public servant, administrator and chief custodian of the much celebrated culture and traditions of his people.”
