MUST READ! Today is World Whisky Day with Johnnie Walker (photo)
When I was a child, I noticed my dad slowly sipping a golden yellow liquid. He closed his eyes as he swallowed each sip, his powerful Adams apple bobbing up and down as the liquid went down his throat.
I asked for a sip and he threw his head back and laughed, that loud boisterous laughter of his, then he patted me on the head and said “no, mon cher, you’re not old enough for this. It’s meant for adults only”.
I was disappointed, but I knew better than press the issue. That didn’t stop me from coveting it though. I loved the smell better than anything else; it smelt strong and raw. I watched him each time as he poured himself a drink; fiery gold liquid that smelt better than anything else.
I also liked the bottle he poured it out from; it had a man in a top hat and a walking stick drawn on it, the man was walking in a way that suggested he was in a hurry to get to his destination- wherever that was.
As I grew older and became a teenager, I knew that the drink I had coveted for years was Johnnie Walker, the finest Scotch whisky.
I got my first taste of Johnnie Walker on my 18th birthday. My father presented me a bottle with my name engraved on it; this is still the best gift I’ve ever gotten till date.
I poured myself a shot and first inhaled that strong, potent aroma for several seconds before tossing the liquid into my mouth. Liquid fire burnt a path from my mouth down my throat and I knew in that instant that I’d never love another drink more than I did Johnnie Walker.
From that day, Johnnie Walker became a partner of sorts as I progressed with joy. It became a tradition for me to share a glass of whisky from that bottle with my name with my father whenever I had achieved another landmark.
Johnnie Walker was the celebratory agent when I graduated top of my class; it was there when I got my first job and when I got my first major promotion. On my wedding day, my father-in-law and I shared a glass from that bottle.
Today, I am pouring the last drops of the bottle into a glass; I am celebrating my son’s admission into the university. Johnnie Walker is more than a drink to me; it is a partner in progress because it has been with me every time I progress with joy.
