Retro series: See what it was like to be living in Lagos in those days (photos)
The mention of Lagos especially to those who don’t reside in the city brings a picture of a city of possibility.
Everybody loves Lagos is a cliché that seems true. The number of visitors going to the former capital of Nigeria keeps rising. Lagos is the home of entertainment, and the financial hub of the country and it is no surprise that it is the destination for Nigeria.

But the perception that Lagos is more fun now than it was in the period immediately before and after independence is debatable. Ask people who have lived in Lagos or visited the city during the independence period and they will tell you the city has lost its unique flavour. They will tell you parties in Lagos have lost its vibe and what is seen now is just a celebration of cacophony. Ask them if they what they think about education in Lagos and they will shake their heads with a sense of nostalgia. This is a new Lagos but the Lagos of old was for everyone. They will tell you there was no huge gap between classes in those days; the well-to-do and the struggling dine together.

The new breeds of Lagosians don’t know what Lagos is like in “those days”. To them, this Lagos is the real Lagos and the wont exchange it for anything. This is the new school, the new rave and the modern one. Regardless of what everyone thinks, the point of agreement is that Lagos, whether the old or new one, is loved.
