Revealed! Niger Delta University abandoned

– The Niger Delta University has been on indefinite strike for six weeks 

– Lecturers in the university have not been paid by the Bayelsa state government

– The government seems to have abandoned the students of the school to their fate

Following the indefinite strike witnessed in their school for about six weeks, students of the Niger Delta University has decided to launch a campaign on social media and organise protests to bring their plight to the public domain.

In a press release sent to the media, the general secretary of the Niger Delta Visionary Movement (NDVM), Comrade Tuwa Samson, who is also a student of the school urged all the relevant stakeholders to resolve the issues surrounding the strike as soon as possible.

According to Comrade Samson, the students right to education is being trampled on, even as he commended the Niger Delta University students thus far for their patience since the commencement of the strike which he said has driven many to constituting nuisance and engaging in social vices within the society.

He stated that the NDVM is poised towards bringing the university strike to an end with peaceful protests and social media protest.

”We call on pressure groups like Amnesty International (AI), Neighbourhood watch (America), Civil Liberty Organisation (CLO), Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Human Right Club (HRC), Femi Falana Organisation (FFO), Ijaw National Congress(INC),Peoples Right Organization (PRO), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Network for Justice (NJ), Human Rights Monitor (HRM),Civil Right Concerns (CRC), Centre for Workers Right (CWR), Afronet( Inter-African Network for Human Rights), Basic Rights Group (BRG) Lagos, The New Initiative for Leadership (NICL), The Ijaw People’s Development Initiative (IPDI), Zonal Human Right Initiative (ZUHURI) to help us out in resolving the issues on ground,” part of the statement read.

The strike was embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Niger Delta University Chapter on Tuesday, April 26, over nonpayment of salaries.

The university was established by the government of the Late Deprieye Alamieyeseigha who recently passed on.

Meanwhile, Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomhole has advised President Muhammadu Buhari not to succumb to the blackmail of the Niger Delta Avengers.

The governor noted that Nigeria deserves to be respected and condemned groups promising to make life difficult for the country.
