CLO backs NJC on sack of Enugu CJ, wants him prosecuted

By Francis Igata
ENUGU—The Civil Liberty Organization,CLO,Enugu Chapter, yesterday, lauded the Nigeria Judicial Council, NJC, over last Friday’s sack of the Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Innocent Umezurike over abuse of his office by accepting gratifications from litigants.

CLO described Umezurike’s conduct while in office as,” not befitting of a judicial officer who had stayed over 17 years as Enugu CJ” and demanded his prosecution.

In a statement issued last Friday at  its 78th meeting under the Chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, the NJC suspended Umezuruike from office with immediate effect over the misconduct.

While backing NJC, member, CLO Board of Governor, Danjuma Gambo, said: “This is commendable. We urge the NJC not to relent and further purge the Judiciary of elements like Umezuruike. This will send a signal that the judiciary as the last hope of the common man is to be trusted.’’
