The girls rescued from Sambisa Forest are not from Chibok – Borno gov’t
by Ranti Joseph
The Borno State government has said that all the 293 women and girls rescued from Sambisa Forest are indigenes of Bumsiri village of Damboa local government area of the state, dashing hopes that some of them could be the Chibok girls abducted in April last year.
Briefing reporters on the development on Wednesday, the state Commissioner of Information, Mohammed Bulama, said that the rescued persons would be reunited with their families soon.
He said, “These girls and women rescued are still our daughters as much as the Chibok girls and we have to commend the military for liberating them, hoping that the rest will equally be liberated.
“Though everyone had thought they were the Chibok girls because of the hype surrounding the abduction of the girls, but we should not lose sight of the fact that they are as important as the Chibok girls and those that are still in captivity, which we hope would be liberated soon.
“But at the moment, we are looking up to the time the 293 women and girls would be handed to us so that we can begin the process of rehabilitating and reintegrating them back into the society.”
Natives of the state received the news with mixed feelings asking the military to give them more evidence in form of images.
To clear doubts, the people of the state demanded images, saying they expected that the military would have posted some pictures for the parents and others to begin to identify some of the women.
“Right now, there is nothing to use to identify who these women are,” a native said.
Also, a front-runner of the Bring Back Our Girls campaign (BBOG), Hauwa Biu, doubted the sincerity of the military authorities and faulted their failure to reveal the identities of those rescued.
