Boko Haram: Nigeria, Chad Basin Countries To Work Out New Strategy

Alex Badeh, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, meets with his colleagues from other member countries of the Lake Chad Basin Commission to work out the processes for strategic combined operations to crush Boko Haram insurgency.

Chris Olukolade, Nigeria’s defence spokesman, has said that the meeting will take place in Abuja on Hune 9, Tueasday.

He noted that this strategy will be an adapted version of the Multi-National Joint Task Force in the campaign against insurgents in the region.

Defence spokesman added the meeting is also introductory to the Extra-Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Governments of the LCBC member countries to advance multilateral discussion on counter terrorism operations in the sub region.

He said: “Military delegation led by the Chiefs of Defence Staff as well as intelligence and security of Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and Chad are to participate in the meeting along with Benin Republic”.

Meanwhile, troops from Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon have been fighting Boko Haram terrorists in northeast Nigeria for several months and have achieved a series of successes.

The spokesman noted that the development is sequel to the recent parleys and contacts between President Muhammadu Buhari and presidents of neighbouring countries in the move to step up the fight against insurgency.

Buhari, who is a former army general, has been Nigeria’s president since May 29 and has made ending the six-year insurgency the top priority for his government.

In his inaugural speech he immediately declared the transfer of the military command centre from Abuja to the strategic city of Maiduguri, in the northeastern rebel stronghold, and visited Niger and Chad to push for continued cooperation.

The president also travelled to the G7 summit of leading industrialised nations to seek further support from world powers on the security threat, comprising intelligence and training.
