Petite Yoruba actress, Iyabo Ojo, has lamented that there is a shakeup in the Yoruba movie industry and movies are no longer doing well in the market, no thanks to piracy.

The mother of two, who is currently planning to increase her string of businesses by opening a restaurant, said her entrepreneurial skills were inspired by the fact that the Yoruba movie industry is really not rewarding financially.

She complained bitterly that the matter became worse with the growing activities of pirates, which has made it impossible for Yoruba movies to do well in the market. Iyabo therefore relished the fact that virtually all her colleagues are now following her footsteps in doing other businesses.

When I wanted to open my SPA business. A lot of my colleagues expressed their concern about how I was going to cover the expenses. But I kept telling them that you have to be doing something else apart from acting. We in the Yoruba Movie sector do not pay ourselves that much and you can’t keep depending on that. The industry is growing but there are challenges because our movies are not doing well as a result of piracy,” she explained.

The actress cum-producer reiterated that she is hoping that the government will really come to the industry’s aid by wielding the big stick on pirates, who have become nightmare for every creative person in the country.

She buttressed her point citing the experiences of Kunle Afolayan and AY as pirates feasted heavily on their movie projects, October 1st and 30 Days in Atlanta respectively. “What if these people didn’t have other means of survival? The government needs to create a disciplinary body that will solely deal with the pirates.”

Piracy has eaten deep into the roots of the Nigerian movie industry and also  the entertainment industry at large.
