Ahead Of US Visit, Buhari Vows To Bring Stolen Money Back

Garba Shehu, the senior special presidential assistant on media and publicity, shared the position of the Buhari administration on several critical questions ahead of next week’s official visit to the USA.

Adeola Fayehun, a SaharaTV correspondent, interviewed the Buhari’s aide on Saturday, July 18, 2015.

Shehu confirmed that President Buhari vowed to the bring back money stolen by the past administrations. He also denied that Onyaku, a former minister of commerce, asked the president to not probe the immediate past leader of Nigeria Goodluck Jonathan.

Fayehun also asked Shehu about the ongoing war against the Boko Haram insurgency, notable presence of the Hausa tribe among the appointees and the recent replacement of the service chiefs.

“Merit was the yardstick that was used to generate these appointments. I don’t think it will be helpful for us to be counting the number of Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo appointments. That’s why the country is in the position where it is today.

“[President Buhari] has over 6,000 appointments to make. Now why would anyone use less than 10 appointments to judge the president on this matter? Again, it balls down to the lack of patience,” Shehu replied.

Commenting on the recent reemergence of Radio Biafra the presidential aide said it plays a negative role for the unity of the country.

“The issue of the oneness of the country had been settled by the civil government, and Nigerians have moved on. I don’t think people should take this fringe group seriously because they do not represent the majority of the country,” he added.

Speaking about the speculations that Obama will try to push Buhari to abolish the anti-gay law signed by Jonathan in 2014, Shehu noted that the opinion of the whole country must be respected:

“The president of Nigeria will address the question when it is raised. Even if President Buhari holds a contrary opinion, he is one person, and he cannot ignore the domestic opinion of the country.”
