Military Checkpoints Removal: What Experts Fear
Experts express concern over the military checkpoints removal across Nigeria under the order of President Muhammadu Buhari.
It should be recalled that Buhari directed checkpoints dismantling in some areas nationwide because of the inconvenience experienced by citizens. Although the army points remained in the regions affected by Boko Haram insurgency, there are fears that the terrorists might use the development to expand the geography of their attacks.

Some security experts spoke with The Punch on the matter. One of them said the military had no other option but to fulfill the directive:
“Well, it was a presidential directive which must be obeyed. What other thing do you think should have been done? Of course, there could be repercussions, the checkpoints had their advantages. What I can say is that we are observing.”
However, there are indication that the decision might be reconsidered.
Earlier this week Colonel Sambo Dasuki, the national security adviser, explained that Buhari had never ordered the removal of all the checkpoints, for example, those located along the highways. He further narrated that army roadblocks in peaceful areas would be demolished but soldiers would remain there without blocking roads.
Meanwhile the terrifying figure was received yesterday by Vanguard: within 39 days Boko Haram insurgents have killed 444 people. It appeared that following power transition to Buhari, who promised to tackle terrorism, the situation even worsened.
People express their outrage in social media, expressing doubt over the things said during the election campaign. Nigerians want to know whether the president has an actual plan to solve the problem.
Still, it is worth noting that the post-inauguration period has been marked by a series of important visits of President Muhammadu Buhari to world leaders and his trips to international summits. There are high expectations from the upcoming meeting of the Nigerian leader with the US President Barack Obama scheduled for July 20.
