Dino Melaye’s ‘Slip Of Tongue’ At The Senate

A little drama ensued yesterday, August 4, at the Senate chamber when Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi West senatorial zone addressed the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki as the Speaker.

Melaye, one of the strong loyalists of the Senate president during the controversial National Assembly elections reportedly stood up to raise a point of order 41(b) over allegations of illegal disengagement of workers of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) when he wrongly addressed Saraki as the Speaker.

Melaye said: “Mr Speaker sir”, instead of saying “The Senate President sir.”

The gaffe by Melaye, a former House of Representatives member shocked his colleagues who laughed it off.

After the laughter which lasted for about two minutes, Melaye then sought to tender a petition written by the disengaged workers. The Senate President granted his plea to tender the petition which is seeking the Senate to compel the FIRS to re-engage the disengaged staff.

Senator Melaye is a strong loyalist of Senate president. He was recently spotted accompanying the Senate president’s wife, Toyin Saraki to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s office in Abuja.
