IAAF: Compact Team To Represent Nigeria
Reports have indicated that a compact group will make ‘Team Nigeria’ which will depart the shores of the country on August 19 to Beijing for the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships.
Omatseye Nesiama, the technical director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.
Fourteen women and three men will be representing the most populous black nation at the championships which will take off on August 22 and end on the 3oth of the same month.
According to Nesiama, the AFN only chose athletes they felt had medal potentials.
He said: “We decided to send a more compact team in order not to just go for a jamboree.
“In addition, we wanted the athletes that have more potential to win laurels mainly at the AAG to avoid distraction of the World Championships and concentrate more on the games.”
He maintained that current-form was a major criteria the federation used as a yardstick to pick the country’s representatives.
