This Is What Senate Will Do Once Buhari Sends Ministerial List – Ekweremadu

Ike Ekweremadu, deputy president of the Senate has said senators were ready to make sacrifice in the interest of Nigerians and Nigeria.

The deputy Senate president, who was speaking on the issue of pay cut of lawmakers, stated that the Senators will put the interest of Nigerians first at all times, This Day reports.

He disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the Enugu zonal management of Nigerian Television Authority.

According to him, the Senators did not consult their colleagues in the House of Representatives on the issue.

He added that the National Assembly had already cut its budget from 150 to 120 billion and required inputs from other wings of the Assembly before a final decision will be taken on the issue.

Recall that the Senate had on Wednesday, August 11, suspended consideration of the report of its finance committee, which was set up to review of the finance of the Senate for the purposes of cutting the cost of government through a downward review of the salaries and allowances of senators and gone a six weeks recess.

Ekweremadu explained that once the upper chamber of the National Assembly receives the ministerial list from President Muhammadu Buhari, they would reconvene from recess.

He said they would also reconvene if any matter requiring their urgent attention arises, This Day reports.

Ekweremadu said: “Though we are on recess, most of us are very much around doing other legislative duties. Therefore, if the need arises, we will quickly reconvene to give Nigerians the service we were elected to offer; especially if the ministerial list is sent by the President.”

On the spate of insurgency in the country, Ekweremadu said: “Insurgency is a different kind of crime and as such needs a different kind of approach,” he said, while calling for concerted efforts in the reduction of poverty, creation of employment and enhancing livelihood of every Nigerian, which he said will go a long way in helping to reduce insurgency and other associated vices.”
