Unilag Prepares For A Record Number Of Candidates Writing Post-UTME

Olagoke Oke, JAMB deputy registrar (information), has said that more than 32,000 candidates will write the 2015 post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) into the University of Lagos (Unilag).

University of Lagos get ready for 32,000 candidates in the forthcoming post-UTME

The examination is scheduled to hold from Wednesday, August 12, to Friday, August 14.

Olagoke told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday, August 8, that the figure was close to four times the 9,000 that was initially posted to the institution by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

NAN informs that the JAMB, in collaboration with some public universities, has agreed to raise the bar of the cut-off marks of their institutions from 200 to 250 for the various courses.

This development generated an outrage among the candidates. Their parents and stakeholders protested too, called on the federal government to intervene.

after consultations between the JAMB, represented by Professor Dibu Ojerinde, and the federal government.

Olagoke said about the forthcoming examination: “I want to say that all logistics toward a smooth conduct of this examination are fully in place, we have always been ready for situations like this and have always got it right.

“Before now, we were hoping to put logistics in place for the initial 9,000 candidates, but with the reversal of the decision, we now have to re-adjust and I want to say that we are fully prepared.

“All our computers and its accessories, the backups, alternative power supply as well as adequate personnel that will conduct the examination are all ready.’’

The deputy registrar noted that the university was compelled to extend the exercise to three days because of the large number of candidates seeking admission into the institution.

However, he advised the candidates to arrive early at the examination centres to ensure that the exercise was hitch-free.

Meanwhile, the Prof Dibu Ojerinde has predicted that post-UTME screening exercise, organized by higher institutions in Nigeria, would soon stop, following the introduction of the computer-based test (CBT).

Ojerinde said the reason for this is that

Post-JAMB tests for applicants were introduced my many universities and polytechnics before they are offered admission, irrespective of whether they passed the JAMB examination. However, the testing also sparked criticism, as it was described as a means of extorting money from applicants.
