Anas' expose': Judiciary fidelity to rule of law still intact- Chief Justice

“honest and robust judiciary” is the people’s last hope and “deterrent principles alone require that we do treat these matters with the urgency and seriousness they deserve”

Chief justice Georgina Theodora Wood has stated that the judicial corruption scandal notwithstanding the Judiciary’s fidelity to the rule of law remains intact.

“Where culpability is established the judicial council is determined to swiftly and decisively apply the appropriate sanctions in accordance with the laws of this land.”

She said an “honest and robust judiciary” is the people’s last hope and “deterrent principles alone require that we do treat these matters with the urgency and seriousness they deserve”

The Chief Justice was speaking at the Ghana Bar Association Annual Conference in Kumasi.

About 34 judges are being investigated after the Anas judicial corruption expose’. Some of the judges have raised legal concerns about the procedure being used to establish a prima facie case against them.

The Chief justice is promised to give the accused persons a fair hearing according to the statutes of the law

“These alleged ignoble acts of betrayal   by these person entrusted with the honour of serving our country but who it is alleged chose rather to do exactly the opposite to serve their own selfish personal goals of enrichment as you know are being investigated. As we investigate the various alleged acts of gross misconduct we will ensure that the rule of law with all the constitutional guarantees and safe guards afforded to all person accused of stated misconduct are fully respected.” She said.

The judges have been accused by ace journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas of engaging in bribery.  According to Anas there are video and audio recordings to prove his case.

The Chief Justice has since set up a committee to investigate matter.  Meanwhile twelve high court judges have until the end of today to submit their written responses to the allegations.
