Buhari Should Know Nigeria Has Left Military Era – Cleric

Anthony Obinna, the Catholic Bishop of Owerri Archdiocese, has blamed President Muhammadu Buhari for sectionalism, saying that the president is behaving like a soldier.

Obinna, speaking ahead of the 2015 Odenigbo annual lecture series, said based on his actions in the last three months, the president still needed to shed his army background, adding that Buhari was still learning how to be democratic.

He said: ”Buhari should know that this country has left the military era where the head of state can do anything without caring about whose ox is gored. He is still behaving like a soldier and being sectionalist and not nationalistic as somebody had said earlier. We are praying for him and expect that he will change his stance on other sections of the country.”

While urging Buhari to carry every section of Nigeria together in his nominations and other activities, Obinna emphasized that appointments should be spread among the six geo-political zones of the country.

He claimed that the president’s “sectionalist’ stance would be hostile to the unity of Nigeria if he did not change.

“When (Gen. Sani) Abacha died, and Obasanjo came in as a democratic president, everybody rejoiced because we all thought democracy would unite Nigeria more as one nation, but it is regrettable that successive administrations have not done much to truly unite the country.

“Every Nigerian is equal to another and therefore should not be segregated upon by any leader,” the cleric added.

President Buhari, who was elected in the March presidential poll, is a former military dictator and political prisoner who once waged a draconian “war against indiscipline” but now insists he is a born-again democrat.
