Cross Rivers State: APC Clarifies Its Position On PDP’s Unity Government

The All Progressives Congress Cross River state chapter, on Saturday, September 12, clarified its position as regards the composition of the state executive council.

The APC said it did not enter into any agreement with the Cross River state governor, Prof. Ben Ayade in forming a unity government, Daily Post reports.

Governor Ayade who is of the Peoples Democratic Party had said he would allot some positions to the APC in his cabinet during a televised interview on Wednesday, September 9, in Calabar.

The national vice-chairman of the APC in the South-South, Mr. Hilliard Eta, however, think there is a concealed motive by the PDP in its latest move. Mr Eta said the proposal was a plot of the Peoples Democratic Party-led government in the state to score cheap political goals.

Eta, in a statement issued through his media aide, Mr. Bassey Ita, said that the APC was not interested in the offer and would not be part of the proposed unity government.

“The idea of a unity government has always been that of the Peoples Democratic Party. The APC believes in a total reform of the inept leadership of the PDP and not to identify with it.

“We have read reports flooding online news portals alluding to the purported formation of a unity government at the instance of Governor Ben Ayade in Cross River State, in which the opposition parties were alleged to have been offered 30 per cent of appointments into the PDP government.

“We are constrained to state here that even though the elections of March 28 and April 11 have placed us as an opposition party in the state, our political belief and ideology as a progressive party coupled with the pride of being the ruling party at the centre compels us to reject such an offer. We would never contemplate such an arrangement as we are completely averse to it,” the statement read.

The statement further read: “For us, who preach the change gospel, it would be foolhardy to accept a mixed bag of change which is the centre point of our ideology and of the ineptitude which has been the disposition of the PDP-led government overtime as we continue to make great strides and efforts to improve on the living conditions of our people.

“This offer is, therefore, in our estimation, another contraption of the PDP to score cheap political points by drawing from the creative and dedicated spirit of our members to reverse the failure of governance.”

Meanwhile the leadership of the South-South zone of the APC has defended the president over  his appointment that members of the opposition especially PDP termed as skewed appointments saying that political appointments is not the yardstick for development.

Eta, the party’s national vice-chairman of the zone stated in Calabar, Cross River state at the end of the party’s post-election zonal executive meeting on Sunday, September 6, that “It is too early in the day to cry wolf; I am assured that the South-South will definitely get its fair share of the appointments. But we should not delude ourselves that appointments are a guarantee to development.”
