Daily Independent MD Lands In Trouble Over Unpaid Salaries

The Lagos state council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for Mr. Ted Iwere, the managing director of Daily Independent to be sacked.

The union said the newspaper company owed members of staff for up to 23 months and did not respond to the welfare of the workers.

In a statement signed by Deji Elumoye and Bimbo Oyetunde,, the chairman and secretary of NUJ respectively, the union condemned the sealing of the premise which is at Ogba, Ikeja and also the use of armed officers to allegedly harass members of staff.

The statement read that “despite owing workers of the media outfit 23 months arrears of salaries, frustration and demotion of staff, management holding on to over four million Naira contribution of members to staff cooperative fund and non remittance of pension funds, among others, the Union had explored all avenues to dialogue with the management to resolve the issues but to no avail. Now, all the management feels it can do is to lock out the workers and use the police to intimidate them.

 “In view of the above therefore, Lagos NUJ is calling on the for the sack of, Ted Iwere, with immediate effect for gross incompetence, misconduct and unprofessional attitude displayed so far”

The statement called for the reopening of the office and the removal of armed officers from the premise. The union threatened industrial action if their demands are not met.
