Ministerial Screening: What Folorunsho Said Will Amaze You
Adewole Folorunsho, one of the ministerial nominees, on Tuesday, October 27, vowed to prevent maternal and infant mortality as well as HIV/AIDS and cancer.
The former Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan said this while responding to questions posed by the lawmakers at his ministerial screening in Abuja.
He called for a conscious effort to tackle the problems in the health sector, particularly with regard to women and infant mortality in the country.
“We should also create platforms to educate women to say no to sex.
“40 to 50 per cent of abortions carried out are because of deformed pregnancies.
“The life of the Nigerian girl is very important; they need proper education on unregulated pregnancies,’’ he said.
He went further to call on relevant stakeholders to take control of the problems in the health sector.
Also, he revealed that the country loses about 800,000 children to preventable causes on a yearly basis.
He went further to say that Nigeria was one of the countries with the highest number of HIV newborns to and over 40,000 women died during pregnancy and delivery on an annual basis.
In this regard, he expressed his commitment to train health personnels and help in funding the health sector.

Meanwhile, Folorunso said the rankings of Nigerian universities are not as bad as they used to be.
He said: “I will always refer to the universities as our nation’s heritage and we have been able to raise the bar of excellence.”
Nigerian doctors can do better than Indians medically if they were provided with good facilities.
He made this statement while answering questions from the lawmakers during the screening on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said that poor health care facility was one of the best ways to curb medical tourism.
“It is an unfortunate consequence of the state of affairs and it had been estimated that we lose between one and three billion naira every year. The most important destination is India and I make bold to say that we have competent Nigerian who can do these jobs,” he stated.
The professor explained that what we need is a well updated and upgraded healthcare system, well equipped with robust infrastructure.
He said: “When that happens it will reduce tourism because it is cheaper to do it at home it is also health promoting to stay with your people.
“Rather than go to India and be treated in an unfriendly environment, I would rather support that we develop the infrastructure at home.”
Folorunso suggested the building of a fully equipped health care centre in every geo-political zone with proper maintenance.
He went further to say that it will be a good job well done if the nation set up such facilities.

While reacting to the increase of private hospitals in the country, he said that a lot of Nigerians patronize private hospitals and as such they should be regulated to ensure they function properly.
The nominee further urged all health care givers to focus on providing health care to Nigerians rather than seeking elective offices in the unions.
He also urged the federal government to build cancer centers in Nigeria as the ailment seems to be fast crawling into the society and claiming the lives of many.
The Senate has screened over I8 nominees so far, Prof. Adewole’s screening exercise was earlier scheduled for Thursday, October 22, but was postponed to Tuesday, October 27.
