Oyo Guber: Tension As Election Petition Tribunal Decides Governor Ajimobi’s Fate Today

The Oyo state governorship election petition tribunal has begun the delivery of its judgment on the April 11 election in the state.

The three-man panel to give the judgement is headed by Justice Muhammad Aliu Mayaki, with Justices Muhammad Karaye and J.E Ikede as members.

As the tribunal began sitting at 10:06am at the High Court, Iyaganku, Ibadan, there was heavy security mounted by thousands of armed policemen, peratives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of the State Security Service (DSS), including those on an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) stationed there and at adjoining roads.

The Nation reports that all residential buildings within 60 meters radius of the Isabo high court, the venue of the Tribunal sitting, were taken over by armed security agents and vehicular and and pedestrians movements were fenced off the area.

As at 7am, seven Hilux police trucks and two Armoured Personnel Carrier was used to block the main gate of the court.

Reacting on the heavy security presence, Leye Oyebade, the Oyo state commissioner of police said they were taking measures to ensure that there is peace before and after the tribunal judgement.

He urged the people of the state to remain calm and ensure that peace is sustained and improved upon.

Abiola Ajimobi of the All Progressives Congress contested for a second term in an election that took place on April 11, 2015. He contested for a second tenure against two of his predecessors in office, Christopher Alao Akala and Rasheed Ladoja. He was declared the winner of the Oyo state gubernatorial election by the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ladoja who contested the election under the platform of Accord Party (AP) challenged the declaration of Ajimobi of as the winner by INEC. His lawyer, Richard Ogunwole opined that the election was marred by irregularities and malpractices.
