Read What Road Sweepers Did To Cross River SSG Over Unpaid Salaries

Street workers and gardeners held Martina Agbor, the secretary to Cross River state government (SSG), hostage at the Calabar Urban Development Authority on Monday, October 5.

Vanguard reports that Agbor arrived the sanitation office to meet with the executive secretary, Joemary Ekeng Ita. According to a source, she wanted to discuss details of the capacity of the authority to clean up the state capital, which had been taken over by refuse dumps.

Meanwhile, workers in the agency, numbering about 500, mobilised and waited patiently until she was shown round the premises.

After the inspection, the SSG was about to leave, but the angry workers who allegedly had not been paid their N5,000 allowances for seven months, surrounded her, demanding their pay.

Desperate workers threatened that if they were not paid, she would not be allowed leave the premises. Agbor was detained in her car until a detachment of the police came to take her out from the premises.

Commenting on the unpleasant incident, the SSG stressed that the state government was not owing the workers, but the contractors handling the evacuation of refuse in Calabar.

“They are saying that government owes them and I ask, owe you, how? Look at the books, they have over 200 workers and yet the town is still dirty. What do we owe them for? Who are those that have been working? That was what brought me here,” she said.

Agbor noted that the state capital used to be the cleanest city in Nigeria but it is losing its status as refuse piles can be noticed around the metropolis lately.

A few days ago, Cross River state workers warned the state government that following the government’s failure to meet their demands.
