Saraki’s Trial: Buhari, Dogara Hold Secret Meeting

There are reports that President Muhammadu Buhari and Yakubu Dogara, the speaker of the House of Representatives, held a meeting on Monday night over the ongoing prosecution of Bukola Saraki, the Senate president.

According to The Punch’s report, a senior official of the House of Representatives said it was a secret meeting.

The official said: “I am aware that he (Dogara) secured a booking to see the President this night. But, this will not be an open meeting just yet. I think he wants to first see Mr. President and inform him about the resolution of the House.”

The source explained that the mood of the president would determine whether he would intervene in the matter.

Saraki is facing a 13-count charge of corruption from the Code of Conduct Bureau. He was arraigned last month before the Code of Conduct Tribunal for an alleged false declaration of assets.

Last week, the House had mandated Dogara to meet with President Buhari over the trial of Saraki and other outstanding issues for the betterment of Nigeria.

When contacted, Sani Zoro, the chairman of the House Ad hoc Committee on Media and Public Affairs, admitted that Dogara was expected to mediate in the Saraki issue, adding that he had been involved in several reconciliation meetings within the party, the All Progressives Congress, and at other levels.

However, he said could not confirm whether Dogara would be holding a meeting with the president.

Another member of Zoro’s committee disclosed that he was aware that the speaker had plans to meet with Buhari between Monday and Wednesday over Saraki’s case.

“He will likely meet with the VP and the SGF on Tuesday (today) before another leg of meeting with Buhari on Wednesday,” the source stated.

Buhari had earlier said he does not have the constitutional power to ask that the trial process against Saraki be stopped. The president had indicated he may have lost confidence in the senator. However, they were both photographed laughing on Thursday last week at an event marking the 55th independence anniversary of the country.

Last week on Thursday, Buhari met briefly with Saraki at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, just after the Independence Day celebration.

Report has it that the Senate president might not face prosecution until the expiration of his tenure as some of his loyalists in the National Assembly are planning to amend the constitution to grant him immunity from prosecution.
