What FG Wants To Do With Farmers In Kano

Not fewer than 20,000 wheat farmers registered from Kano state are to benefit from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture fertilizer and other inputs during this year’s dry season farming.

State chairman of the National Association of Wheat Farmers (NAFW) made the disclosure while speaking to newsmen over the weekend.

According to him, the Association had forwarded a list of successful farmers to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture (FMA) for the commodity through the state commissioner for Agriculture for consideration.

He pointed-out that the selected farmers were expected to receive fertilizers, improved seeds, water pumping machines and other farm inputs incidental to their farming from the government through the Growth Enhancement Scheme (GES), a program designed to boost the morale of farmers’, being run by the FMA.

The chairman further stated that farmers have gone far in clearing their lands in readiness for the commencement of the planting time which will start by the end of October.

Federal government’s decision to assist farmers in this direction was borne out of the need to resuscitate the production of wheat, which most of the farmers are abandoning due to non-patronage and the fact that the commodity is fast becoming scarce owing to lack of market after its harvest.

He however concluded that, most of the farmers are now trying to harvest their rice and a soon as they finish, they will commence planting of wheat for the dry season farming and urged state government’s to complements efforts of the FMA by providing other needed items for the wheat farmers.
