Why Edo Lawmakers Set To Impeach Escapee Speaker
Calm now pervades the Edo state legislature as a move to impeach the speaker of the state House of Assembly, Victor Edoror, proved abortive on Monday, October 19, following his escape from the wrath of members of the House.
The Nation reports that owing to the tension at the premises, workers at the assembly spoke in low tunes about the speaker’s possible impeachment, while sympathizers of the speaker stayed around his office.
However, reports had it that the members of the House were not able to sit till about 5pm and held plenary for about 10 minutes because of executive session of the lawmakers which lasted over four hours.

It was reported that some of the lawmakers were angry when they discovered that council chairmen in the 18 local government of the state had paid N2 million each to the Edo House speaker for the renovation of the lawmakers’ quarters.
Nevertheless, another report disclosed that for the past six months, the lawmakers of the House had been receiving N1.3 million payment from the council chairmen.
There had been some sort of bad blood the speaker of the House and some lawmakers. They had been against the leadership of Edoror in the hallowed chamber.
As a result of the apparent loggerheads, it was said that there had continually been tension among House members and the bid to dethrone the speaker.

In the same line of payment, it was also said that the lawmakers in September collected N3 million from the council chairmen in order to stamp down a report on the council’s internally generated revenue prepared by a committee headed by the deputy speaker, Bright Osayande.
One of the Edo lawmakers who said the impeachment process was still on and that it was only postponed stated that they were searching for the mole among them, The Nation reports.
The Edo state House of Assembly had about a week ago approved the suspension of four council chairmen in the state requested earlier by Governor Adams Oshiomhole.
Meanwhile, an 80-year-old woman identified as Comfort Izedomwen was arrested by the police command in Edo state on Monday, October 19, for unlawful possession of 68 live cartridges.
