Is The Nigerian Flag Boring?
To you, is the Nigerian flag a source of patriotic pride or a cause to yawn?
If you ask Nkem Ifejika, a Nigerian journalist living in the UK who was speaking on BBC radio, the flag of Nigeria is “deadly boring,” which is why he’s interested in other flags from around the world.
Reaction to Iefjika’s comments has been swift and varied, some leapt to defend Nigeria’s flag, but some also said it was boring.
Some used the controversy to make a point about the ongoing conflict over national identity in Nigeria.
Others still made it clear that they think the flag is boring.
Some Twitter users took the issue about the flag too personally and ‘exploded’ mocking the BBC or other flags.
The green and white (green representing the abundant natural wealth of Nigeria and white representing unity and peace) banner was chosen to be the Nigerian national flag all the way back in 1959.
It was created by student Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi and was first hoisted in 1960 after Nigeria became an independent country.
Does the present green and white banner stir the patriotism within you so you want it to say as it is, or do you think the flag is boring and should be changed?
