Love And Heartbreak Takes Centre Stage At Karaoke Competition

Episode six of Africa’s first televised karaoke competition, TECNO Own The Stage, took place on Sunday, December 20, and it started out on a positively surprising note as the show’s host, Uti Nwachukwu, introduced renowned model and television personality, Vimbai Mutinhiri, as his co-host.

And the gorgeous 28-year-old Zimbabwean got a resounding applause from the audience before going on to announce the theme of Sunday’s show: love and heartbreak.

Another surprise from Sunday’s show was the revelation that the contestants have been receiving some measure of training from three of Africa’s foremost songwriters – AY, Anto Neo Soul and ID Cabasa. No wonder their performances have been getting better and better with each passing episode.

With the judges – Bien, Yemi and M.I. – expected to eliminate two contestants at the end of Sunday’s show, the 11 left in the contest came into the show keen to impress and remain in contention for the $25,000 star prize.

And first on stage was Kenyan-born Ramar254 who performed KC’s ‘I’m missing you’ before leaving the stage for Zoccu, who sang Alicia Keys’ ‘Falling’, a song that seemed like it was personally dedicated to M.I. going by the way the Tanzanian kept pointing in the direction of the judge, and his animated reaction whenever she did.

At the end of Zoccu’s performance, she received the praise of all three judges, in particular M.I., who also complimented the Tanzanian on the way she looked on the night.

It was thereafter the turn of another Tanzanian, Nandy, to take to the stage, where she performed Adele’s ‘Rolling in the deep’. And in her usual way, Nandy wowed the audience and the judges, and deservedly got a standing ovation. Even the judges ran out of superlatives in describing her performance, with Bien openly stating how “attractive and entertaining” Nandy was on the night.

Bien also said that he had a feeling Nandy “had been preparing for the competition” all her life “in front of a mirror.”

But if Nandy got a standing ovation for her performance, it was nothing close to what Shaapera got from the audience and the judges after her outstanding rendition of Asa’s ‘Bi ban ke’ with Yemi quick to remind everyone present, especially Bien, that she was the one who selected Shaapera for the show at the end of the Nigerian auditions.

Bien had at the start of Sunday’s show boasted that all five Kenyans he had picked from the auditions in Kenya were still in contention for the $25,000 grand prize.

Jeff (Tanzania), Mary (Tanzania), Tosin (Nigeria), Yubu (Kenya), Gazby (Nigeria), Sikin (Kenya) and Pascal (Kenya) also performed in Sunday’s show at the end of which Gazby, Tosin, Jeff and Ramar254 were thereafter shortlisted by the judges for eviction.

But only two had to leave and the unfortunate duo turned out to be Jeff and Gazby which meant all five Kenyans are still in contention along with two each from Nigeria and Tanzania.

Don’t miss the next episode of TECNO Own the Stage on Sunday, December 27th 2015!
