#PulseList 2015: 10 Nigerian comedians who took social media by storm this year

10 Nigerian comedians who took social media by storm this year

These are the finest comedians who made 2015 a fantastic year for Nigerians.

The Comedy industry has become a multi-billion dollar industry all over the world and comedy itself has become a lucrative profession. That’s probably why we had more comedy happening in 2015 than at any other point in human history.

This year we saw TV stations, Internet news medium, radio stations and blogs putting out comedy skits and pranks in a bid to gain more followers and readers.

A number of young people in Nigeria also pursued a career in comedy putting out funny, creative viral videos on social media. Unfortunately for them, not every comedy skit and prank that was made this year can be named one of the best.

Here are 10 that definitely can. Determined after considerable hand-wringing and a closely guarded (completely proprietary) stalking and well thought out process, we’re confident that these are the finest comedians who made 2015 a fantastic year for Nigerians.

1. Craze Clown and tegaa_

Craze Clown’s accent and Yoruba man charm could win anyone over. A medical doctor based in Ukraine and with over 509k followers, Tega and Crazeclown are a fantastic duo who regale their social media followers with clichéd Nigerian situations we can all relate.

I love the fact that their jokes build up slowly and satisfyingly. However, despite the huge followership, the Baba Tobi narrative is getting boring and too repetitive.

2. Emma oh my God

Emma oh my God proves you can be hilarious without working or fixating on sex, but it’s not like he’s a puritan or a moralist, or anything. He’s just an affable guy with great timing and some hilarious stories to share. His Chris Brown dancing to Shina peters, his hilarious covers to popular songs and Michael Jackson dancing to a Nigerian song were a huge hit. With close to 44k followers Emma oh my God is a great comedian and he sure made 2015 a fantastic year for us.

3. Wofaifada

Wofaifada’s videos could be described as different and hypnotically absurd; her comedy skit is often untethered and weird. Her collaborations with other comedians and popular celebrities is brilliant and commendable and it shows that she understands the business of comedy.

She clocked 100k on instagram recently and this platform has proved to be a perfect showcase for her cutting wit and playfulness. Long may she run.

4. Tolulope (@dntjealousme)

Tolulope is perfectly poised to be the next big thing, and he knows it. In fact, he’s so down-to-earth there are times when even he seems surprised by the reaction a joke is getting. With over 252k followers in Instagram, Tolulope’s presence on social media is huge next to Craze clown.

5. Dami Olatunde AKA AphricanApe (aphricanape06)

With an eclectic résumé, a B.SC, an MBA and a M.SC Dami olatunde is one of those comedian we should respect.  He is described as one of the most eccentric, talented and multi-dimensional performers and comedians in the game right now.

6. Theonlychigul (chioma Omeruah)

Chioma Omeruah is well known on instagram and on traditional media. She has an unavoidable presence in the comedy world, and we couldn’t be happier about that. She is an unstoppably funny mix of social commentary, modesty, and razzness all rolled in one. Her Tedx inspiring video is one we would not forget in a hurry.

7. Chief Obi

Chief Obi's energy is always high on his instagram account and he definitely knows how to handle the flow of joke, plus he has a huge presence on Instagram with 153k followers.

8. MAMA TOBI (oluwakaponeski)

Mama Tobi’s enthusiastically awkward videos and debates about Ghanaian Jollof, makeup tutorials, drinking, Nigerian girls is hilarious and very creative. His sharp mind and dry wit made him one of the most beloved figures on instagram.

9. Foxy P (thefoxhimself)

A real fox to the core, there’s a warmth to Foxy p’s comedy videos that makes watching him a pure joy. Without sacrificing cleverness or honesty, this comedian is funny and bright. With 60k followers on Instagram, we hope he would up his game next year.

10. Akanm D Boy (iamkanmi)

Kanmi is funny. His videos exudes confidence and his delivery is not clichéd like many of his peers. But amid all his theatrics and odd accent it would be a shame to overlook his creativity and brilliance in some of his videos.

Honourable mentions

Chuzzus

Chuzzus went viral after Solange Knowles retweeted a picture of him. Chuzzus has found a very entertaining way to take the fun out of just about anything even his selfies are very funny. However, he doesn’t make comedy videos but memes.

Comedian Ebiye

He became popular after he made two funny videos about him getting married to Linda Ikeji. He is definitely one of the comedians we should watch out for next year.

Comedians like Basketmouth, Tee A and Ali Baba have done extremely well and we have a fantastic generation of exciting young comedians coming up behind them.

This list is all the proof you need to let you know that we’re in the middle of a comedy boom.
