Union Leader Stabbed To Death While Leaving Mosque In Lagos

One of the leaders of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Lagos state was stabbed to death on Thursday, December 3, at Abule-Egba, Lagos. 

According to the New Telegraph, the deceased, Taye Ogunlaja, went for afternoon prayer and was leaving the mosque when an unknown person stabbed him to death from behind.

The report informed that homicides detectives attached to the Lagos State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, are already investigating the case in order to fish out the suspect.

The union leader was said to be preparing for a trip to France with his family when the incident occurred. He had reportedly just secured visas for his family.

The late Ogunlaje was a member of the NURTW, Marina branch. On the day he died, he had gone to attend a meeting of the union which was aimed at settling the crisis that has been bedeviling the union which was said to have been polarised over an undisclosed issue.

Recounting how her husband lost his life, the wife to the deceased said:“Thursday last week, my husband received a phone call from one of the union members. He called him to remind him of their monthly meeting at the state secretariat. My husband immediately dressed and left. About 1pm, I called him to know if he was at the venue of the meeting. He said he was already there. 

”He said he didn’t understand the kind of pranks some of the members were playing. He said they were asking him to give account of money he did not know about. He said he would soon leave the meeting to go to the mosque for prayer.”

Mrs Ogunlaja further narrated that about 6pm, she called her husband again, but this time, she heard people screaming that he had been stabbed on the neck from behind.

“He told me that he was stabbed while returning from the mosque. I never knew he was in the hospital when he was speaking with me.  

“I was later told my husband died before they got to LASUTH. I’m begging the police to ensure my husband’s killers are fished out and brought to book.”

About two months ago, tragedy struck in the Oshodi area of Lagos as a leader of the NURTW, Olayinka Mamowora popularly known as Mamok, was gunned down by a rival group.
