12 Things That Will Remain The Same In Lagos In 2016
Editor’s Note: Like the weather, Lagos is a dynamic city. Things move very quickly and nothing really stays the same. But come what may, some things will always remain the same in Lagos. Naij.com Lagos contributor Ajoke Rukayat takes a look at those things that are constant as the northern star.
Everybody is always conscious of the fact that change is ever constant. From our body structure to the neighbourhood and way of life, there is little anyone can do to prevent these changes, especially if they are natural in nature.
This may, however, leave out the metropolitan city of Lagos, where some things may not change from the way they are presently.
Here are a few of the things we think might remain unchanged in Lagos in the New Year.

1.Traffic: The word ‘traffic’ is synonymous to Lagos. In fact, it has come to define Lagos. Although government keeps trying her best to ease up traffic in the city, it has never gotten better. 2016 might be another year to be on the lookout for heavy traffic situations on the metropolis.
2.Harassments from Touts: For a while, everyone thought harassment from touts was on a decline until recently. In 2016, this might remain the same if Governor Akinwumi Ambode does not stay stern about it.
3.Security: Towards the end of 2015, the city experienced quite a lot of security challenges, thereby putting residents on their toes. Until the government finds a better way to take care of this, things might sadly remain the same in 2016.
4.Outrageous Rents: Year in year out, the high cost of living keeps flying; in fact, rent payment is a major one. Sadly, the Lagos government has not been able to come up with a way of regulating this. In 2016, do not expect that your landlord will surprise you with a bonanza on your rents.
5.Crowd: Every year, lots of people leave their villages and other parts of the country for the metropolitan city of Lagos in search of greener pastures. This has contributed immensely to the overcrowding of Lagos city. In 2016, things are not about to change; there will still be the inflow of more people into the city.
6.Environmental Concerns: The sight of officials cleaning major streets in Lagos is always a delight to behold. All thanks to the monthly sanitation exercise for everyone and weekly one for the market women. This is here to stay and nothing might be able to turn it around in 2016.
7.Incessant power outage: Although electricity supply has been better a bit, it has however not gotten to the desired level every Lagosian has been yearning for. In 2016, things might be the same if necessary steps are not taken to look into the electricity challenges.

8.Street Fights: This is a general occurrence in Lagos. Street fights have come to stay in Lagos. This also has shaped the outlook of the metropolis.
9.Touts: The presence of street urchins is one of the most prominent features in the city of Lagos. They are full of various unpalatable vices. In 2016, things might not change.
10. Night Life: Lagos has been tagged the ‘headquarters of night life’. This is due to the fact that fun is unending in the city. No matter the time of the day, fun is guaranteed. This is not going to change in 2016.
11.Theft: Unless one is a JJC in Lagos, everyone knows that it is almost a norm for theft and incessant pilfering to take place in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
12. Area Boys: Yes, you know, the ubiquitous street urchins who forcibly demand for money and can get violent at the drop of a hat. They are not going away soon.
While we think these things are not likely to change in the course of the year, it is believed that we could serve as change agents to make sure the state takes a new status.
