Godfatherism Panic: Edo Elders Issue Stern Warning To Oshiomole

The Benin Leaders of Thought have issued a serious warning to Governor Adams Oshiomole of Edo not to re-introduce political godfatherism to the state considering that he had fought against it in the past.

PM News reports that the elders issued this warning on Tuesday, January 5 after rumour sufficed that the governor was trying to impose an aspirant ahead of the 2016 gubernatorial election in the state.

It was reported that some political aspirants in the state expressed their displeasure over rumour that the governor had urged his aides to promote Dr. Godwin‎ Obaseki, the chairman of the state economic team to the people of the state.

Prince Edun Akenzua, the Enogie of Obazuwa and the chairman of the Benin Leaders of Thought said that the rumour has been going around in the state and while they are yet to ascertain it, it called for concern.

The group said the governor, just like every other citizen had the right to support a candidate but this should be done while respecting the right of other citizens.

The Edo Elders said: “that godfatherism in Edo politics was detrimental to the social, economic and political development of the state. Godfatherism is not acceptable to BLT and the good people of Edo State. It should not be reintoduced under any guise.

“The people of Edo State should be given free hands to determine their ‎next governor. Popular participation bestows responsibility for governing one’s own conduct, develops ones character, self-reliance, intelligence and moral judgement. In a democracy there is no substitute for popular participation. Even if a benevolent despot could govern in the public interest, he would be rejected by the classic democrat. Man can omly know the truth by discovering it himself.”

The group promised to continue to support the state government and commended Governor Oshiomole on the things he had done in the state.
