How water vendors are making it big in Lagos
– Due to lack of good water supply in some parts of the country, water vendor seized the opportunity to make money
-Residents of Amuwo Odofin appeal to Lagos state government to help their plights
Life, interestingly takes the nomenclature of a two sided-coin. What appears like a problem may also be a golden opportunity for another person. This is the case of Muhammadu Kabiru, a water vendor who became a house owner in Lagos.
To residents of Mile 2, Amuwo Odofin local government area, lack of good water supply has been a major challenge. But to Kabiru, this presents an opportunity to explore his business trait.
The residents have been experiencing water scarcity in the last six months while Kabiru has seized this vacuum to supply water to the residents.

Kabiru, like other young people across the country have been making ends meet through this kind of business.
Speaking with Naij.com, the water vendor popularly known as Maruwa said he own two houses and has two wives.
Kabiru said he finances his family through money realised from the business.
Kabiru who resides in the area said he makes an average of N1,200 daily. He usually buys three drums of water at the rate of N700 and sells every morning beginning from 5:30am to 8am at the rate of N50 for a 20-litre keg.
According to him, he makes averagely N150 profit on each drum.
”A friend of mine introduced me to the business, when I relocated from Agege area of Lagos, three years ago, I found it was very lucrative even though is demanding. I’ve been able to make gains supplying water to some people around the street.
”A water tanker supplies me from FESTAC every evening and which I resupply very early in the
morning to my buyers,” he said.
A resident who introduced himself as Adewale Makinde said he buys water from Maruwa weekly for N4000.

According to him, he is fond of patronising the water vendors even though the kegs are not that clean.
”Sometimes the water supplied is not hygienic and there is a tendency that anybody can contact
water borne diseases such as Typhoid fever or Cholera,” a resident complained.
However, the residents of the locality have cried out and appealed to the Lagos state water co-operation for a free flow of water supply as it is inline with the promise made by the Lagos state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.
”Ambode said the water scarcity being experienced by residents in the state will soon be resolved and his administration has assured the residents in the state that the challenges relating to public water supply currently affecting some parts of the metropolis will soon become a thing of the past. We hope this is realised soon,” another resident said.
