The minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Muhammad Bello on Sunday, February 7 said that rail transport operation within Abuja will commence in December 2017.
Speaking during a meeting with Ibe Kachikwu, the minister of state for petroleum, the FCT minister said FCT Administration is working assiduously to ensure the rails are operational by December, 2017.
Bello said the Abuja rail system will compliment public transportation and help reduce traffic experienced at the periods in Nigeria’s capital city.

He said the Abuja rail system would revolutionize the transportation system, as the use of personal vehicles would become unattractive.
In addition, the minister said the rail transport system would also create employment for some residents of the FCT.
Rather than the one mega station earmarked for each senatorial district of Nigeria, Bello further urged the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to build fuel stations in the six area councils of the FCT.
He said the additional mega stations will reduce the stress on many residents who live in the area councils and the satellite towns.
“Citing mega filling stations in the area councils will definitely reduce pressure on the stations in the Federal Capital City,” Bello said.

Bello promised to provide good locations in the headquarters of the six area councils for the mega stations.
He added that the FCTA is prepared to go into partnership with NNPC by giving befitting and strategic plots of land for the stations, which would give the administration equity share in the business.
Also, Kachikwu said the corporation is making plans to construct additional mega filling stations in all the senatorial districts of the country in partnership with the states of the federation; which is three per state.
Kachikwu further said that 15 state governors had already indicated interest by providing plots of land for the programme.
He called on the FCT minister to key into the scheme by making available its plot of land for the purpose.
