Rev. Fr. Gideon Obasogie who is the spokesperson for the Catholic Church in the north east has applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for his war on corruption and has described corrupt officials as worse than Boko Haram terrorists.

The former national security adviser, Sambo Dasuki is facing charges over the diversion and misappropriation of fund meant for the purchase of arms to fight Boko Haram. His arrest has implicated some members of the Peoples Democratic Party who allegedly received fund from the $2.1 billion arms fund.

Some officials that served during the administration of former president, Goodluck Jonathan are either under the radar of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission or are facing charges.

The Punch reports that Obasogie said the diverted fund could have been used to combat the terrorists.

The Catholic priest who spoke on Saturday, February 20 berated politicians who betrayed the trust of the people by spending public fund. He said their action led to the loss of numerous lives.

He described the president’s anti-corruption was as a new page in the country’s history and advised the president to sustain the war on corruption.

He said: “The anti-corruption war is a new page of development in the history of Nigeria. It is unfortunate that the funds meant for the prosecution of the war against the Boko Haram sect were diverted by corrupt politicians, leading to the loss of innocent lives. These corrupt politicians are worse than the Boko Haram insurgents because they flagrantly betrayed public trust.

“While we pray that God grants the President the sense of direction to move Nigeria to the next level, it is of note that corruption will always fight back. While the war against corruption is commendable, efforts should be made by the President to ensure that this move is sustained.

“Apart from this, the anti-corruption war should not be limited to government officials alone. Nigerians must understand that they have a role to play by shunning corruption as it presents itself in every area of their lives.”
