Lassa fever spread: Delta state government fumigates major Markets in the state

As part of its proactive measures against the spread of Lassa fever spread in the state, the Delta state government has commenced the fumigation and deratilisation programme at the Ogbeogonogo Modern Market Asaba, the state capital.

The State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. John Nani said that the on-going exercise will extend to Warri, Sapele and other populous strategic areas, especially the commercial centres across the state.

He noted that the ministry started the exercise with sensitisation, (a process which he said is still on-going), adding that the proactive measures employed by the state government was in line with the state government’s policy thrust.

The commissioner who monitored the exercise said that the state government is always known for taking such preventive approaches, adding that similar proactive mechanism employed during the flood disasters experienced across the nation saved the state from catastrophes.

He expressed satisfaction with the exercise which began during late hours of Wednesday, February 10 after the close of the market with deratilisation, a process which involves the introduction of poisonous substances in the premises of Ogbeogonogo Market.

The deratilisation exercise successfully resulted in the death of many rats, rodents and cats in the premises. Also, it helps to prevent what one of the experts in the fumigation industry handling the exercise Mr Benson Oluwashegu described as a prevention of secondary poisoning.

The fumigation of the market according to Hon Nani will kill the flies also in the process preventing them from spreading poisonous or harmful substances after visiting any dead rat. He added that the ministry has put in place an effective measure to ensure the picking and effective disposal of some of the dead animals.

He commended the state government for taking such proactive safety measures, which he said puts the state as a pacesetter among other states and the first in the nation to employ the services of high pressure equipment designed to cover large areas.
