Pulse Opinion: Davido’s excessive display of money is becoming nauseating

Davido rocking his gold Rolex watch

We know Davido likes to show off his expensive toys but it's high time he takes a chill pill.

David Adeleke a.k.a Davido has been in an overdrive of buying expensive Rolex watches shortly before he signed his deal with Sony Global.

According to his latest declaration Davido has bought a Rolex watch worth over N30m and 2 Rolex watches for his label mates.

Now granted that there is nothing in buying a Rolex watch for yourself and Rolex watches for your guys but bragging about the price is distasteful especially in a time when Nigerians are feeling the hardship of a weak economy.

Not only did Davido brag about the price of his expensive watch but he broke down the cost implication of its price. On February 11 he said that two of his watches cost 20 cars. He also added that he is very cocky. At least Davido is aware of how arrogant he can be at times.

Really to me there is no difference between Linda Ikeji defending the authenticity of her Hermes Birkin bags and Davido bragging about the price of his watches. They are in the same bracket, but one wonders why Linda Ikeji got slated and Davido didn’t get the negative press.

If Davido isn’t talking about his watches, it will be about his cars and garage filled with exotic cars. If it’s not talking about them he is flaunting money on his Instagram account.

I guess Davido will always be expected to be act like a spoilt brat in the eyes of the public. In the Bible, Saint Paul wrote “When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

One wonders when this will apply to Davido. He is 23 going to 24. Some will say he is just a kid but really a 24-year-old is no longer a child but a man. Even artistes within his age bracket are acting more composed and matured. Wizkid is a year older than and even though he has had his moments of showing off he has toned down a lot recently.

Rapper Ice Prince has never even been about that life really except showing off his latest car. He hardly shows off his wealth and acquisitions. Somehow Davido has been stuck in the mindset of “I have money and I must show everybody.” He is like the rich kid in school that wants everyone to know how much his pocket money is.

It’s therefore not surprising that Davido and his manager were robbed in South Africa last November. With such an extravagant lifestyle Davido would definitely attract men of the underworld.

Omo Baba Olowo should tone down on his excessive display of materialism. It’s getting nauseating and tiring. And his mind state has kind of held back his music. Yes, Davido we know you have money but switch it up a little bit, and sing about something else. His music is not daring, it’s not challenging and that’s because Davido is trapped in this cocoon of excessive materialism.

Maybe Davido needs an encounter in life to help alter his value system. No one is saying money is bad, but he has to chill in putting his money in our faces. We need something fresh from him, and not a bunch of Rolex watches. It’s time Davido grows up.
