A yet-to-be-identified student of the Kwara State Polytechnic (KP), Ilorin, has been reportedly shot dead by unknown gunmen who stormed the institution on Monday, February 22.

According to The Punch, the gunmen, about five in number, were said to have fled after shooting the student in his second year.

Some of the students who witnessed the incident informed  that they suspected the victim to be a member of a rival cult group.

An eyewitness added that after the close of work on Monday, one of the gunmen shot the student from a far distance but when he did not get the desired result, they all went after the student, grabbed him and pumped bullets in his head before leaving him for dead.

“The police raced to the scene of the incident, took and deposited the remains of the student at the mortuary of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital,” a source who pleaded anonymity, stated.

While confirming the killing, the institution’s registrar, Moses Salami stated that the police and operatives of the Department of the State Services (DSS) had been patrolling the campus since the incident happened.

He said: “It is true that on Monday, around 7.30pm, we learnt that one ND2 student was shot dead, and the police was immediately alerted.

“They arrived at the scene of the incident and took his corpse away to UITH. Since then, the security agencies have been coming to our polytechnic to investigate the incident.”

Ajayi Olasunkanmi, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), who also said he was aware of the killing, said: “I heard that a student was killed at Kwara State Polytechnic on Monday.”

In a related development, 11 former executive members of the students of society of history and international studies at the Lagos State University (LASU) have been indefinitely suspended by school authorities.

In its official bulletin on Wednesday, the institution informed that students organised an association award night party of February 11 which led to the death of a 200 level female student, Omolara Gbadeyan.

According to Leadership, the affected students are no longer permitted to participate in any student-related activity until further notice as the would also be made to face the students disciplinary committee immediately.

LASU authorities are claiming that the organisers of the party, which claimed the life of the student, did not inform them before coming up with the event, a situation which is contrary to the rules and regulations of the institution.

The teenager, who until his death was a student of a secondary school (name witheld) in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, was administered with an unknown liquid substance by three other classmates during money making ritual process which led to his untimely death.
