Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state has once again spoken in defence of Ali Modu Sheriff, the new chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking at a press conference in the state, Fayose criticised PDP members opposed to the appointment of Sheriff as chairman of the party, The Cable reports.

He said: “But most of the people clamouring, particularly in the north today, I want to say that none of them won 10 percent in their state. What are they bringing to the table to continue with this argument?

“What is their relevance at home? But as a leader, I still have to appeal to them. They should please allow the dust to settle and channel this energy against Ali Modu Sheriff’s chairmanship into rebuilding the party.”

Explaining his support for Sheriff, Fayose said he is not looking for any favours from him, adding: “As a governor, he can’t give me money.”

The Ekiti governor said the internal crisis they were going through was normal and they will overcome it.

“Our party is a party that has an avalanche of qualified people who can proffer solution to our problems. We accepted to serve not because we are the best, but because we have been identified to be capable of doing the task ahead,” he said.

The appointment of Sheriff has been strongly criticised by some members of the PDP, leading to calls for his resignation.

Sheriff has, however, insisted that he will not resign.

Fayose had earlier called on all his admirers and stakeholders to support Sheriff, who according to him had the ability to re-position the party.
