Tragedy averted as house catches fire in Lekki
– The fire service had to be called in to help quench the fire
– The occupants of the house had been asleep and were rescued because the security guard was still awake
What could have ended in disaster and anguish in a close in Lekki, Lagos, was averted last night, February 2. The house, a four bedroom duplex, would have burnt to the ground, save for the timely intervention of the security guard and men of the fire service.

The fire was said to have started around 1 am, in the master bedroom, where unknown to the other occupants of the house, the Air Conditioner was left on even after the man of the house had travelled. The Air Conditioner caught fire, which spread onto the mattress and lit up the room, causing the heat to shatter the windows.
The security guard had been seating outside, keeping guard, when the glass from the room windows fell to the ground, alerting him to the fire outbreak. The guard then ran to the main entrance of the building, and kept banging on the door of the house in a bid to rouse the occupants from their sleep.

According to an eyewitness, some of the other security guards on the street, joined in the banging, while the Lekki Residents Association fire service were called to put out the fire. The occupants of the house were locked in and screaming, “Help, fire”
The fire service came in their fire truck and the fire was promptly stopped from spreading into the other rooms. Thankfully, no lives were lost, with only minimal damage to property.
