Tragedy struck in the Ikeala Ahiaba autonomous community in Obingwa local government area of Abia state when Eze James Nwabekee, the traditional ruler was shot dead by gunmen.

The Nation reports that the tragic incident happened on Monday, February 22. The gunmen reportedly stormed the house of the monarch around 10pm and attempted to kill one of his sons but he escaped. It was not clear however if Nwabekee was killed because his son escaped or it was accidental.

A source in the community said after the monarch was killed other members of his relatives were left injured. The number of people injured has not been ascertained but members of the community have yet to fathom the reason for the attack.

Ezekiel Onyeke Udeviotu who is the spokesperson for the police force confirmed the incident. He said there were four gunmen and that the wife of the traditional ruler was shot and that she’s receiving treatment in a hospital.

“From the look of things, the hoodlums were ready to take more lives, because after killing the monarch, they went to one of his son’s room and shattered it with bullet. But he escaped.”

He urged members of the community to come with useful information that would help the police as investigation has already begun.

Traditional rulers in Nigeria seems to be going through a tough period as the spate of kidnapping monarchs for ransom has increased.

Following the kidnap of traditional ruler in Imo state by suspected kidnappers, kings under the auspice of Monarchs in Owerri Senatorial zone decided to seek spiritual and divine intervention into the abduction of their colleague.
