YABATECH Crisis: Students defy rector's order to vacate campus
The school authority shut down the school after students violently protested the ‘questionable’ death of final year colleague, Dazan Charity.
According to recent report, the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, YABATECH has been shut down for the next four weeks and students have been directed to leave campus during this time.
The school authority made the move after students violently protested the ‘questionable’ death of final year colleague, Dazan Charity.
According to the directive, no students should remain on the campus from Thursday, February 11.
The students, however, refused to obey this order, and have sealed all entrances to the school in protest.
Witness report showed that Dazan fell ill on Tuesday, February 9. After visiting the hospital clinic, she was referred to Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute-Metta.

Both medical facilities were unable to make quick decisions to save her life, reports say. She was, Wednesday, buried at Atan Cemetery which is not very far from the school.
The school issued a directive mandating all students to leave the campus. The school library and departmental blocks have also been sealed to forestall vandalisation.
Speaking to NewsroomNG, one student said ‘We have sealed the school gates again and are not going anywhere.'

A source from the school management said, “some dangerous elements are using Dazan’s death to call for the resuscitation of the Student Union Government (SUG)” which was banned a while back.
But the students who spoke to NewsroomNG said they want to mourn Dazan for two weeks and write exams after that.
‘We are not prepared to go for any four week break…it’s too long,’ one student said.
‘We will remain here and mourn our colleague. We are not leaving.’
They urged all those leaving the campus to stay put.
