Mother shocked to discover her baby boy was left fighting for life after suffering a stroke at just two days old.
Ashleigh Wallace, 24, was just discharged and on her way home when she noticed her Newborn Charlie Garrett was twitching.
Medics suspected the baby was having seizures and he was taken into intensive care, the Daily Record reported.
He had an EEG to check his brain but the neurologist told Ashleigh and fiance Derek Garrett, 26, they hadn’t found anything specific.
Charlie was allowed home from hospital but went back for an MRI scan.
Three weeks later, the couple received the devastating news that Charlie had suffered a stroke.
Ashleigh, from Johnstone, Renfrewshire, told Mirror UK: “I am a nurse and I work in a high dependency unit.
“I am with adults who have had strokes but I have never heard of a baby having one. I just want to make people aware of it.
“We were told the worst-case scenario could be he would develop cerebral palsy but it is an evolving picture as babies’ brains can develop.”
Charlie has had specialist physiotherapy but it is too early to say if there will be lasting damage.
Ashleigh, who is also mum to twins Olivia and Sophia, said: “It is just a waiting game and it is horrible.”
The couple still don’t know why Charlie had a stroke two days after he was born at Paisley’s Royal Alexandra Hospital in August.
Ashleigh is still grateful that Charlie was diagnosed early.
She said: “Some babies can have a stroke and no one knows anything about it until they are much older and start to walk and then their parents realise something is wrong."
