Pulse Opinion: Arrogance in Nigerian celebrities is a good thing

Critics have long argued about the pros and cons of arrogance in a Nigerian celebrity. Many are of the opinion that it is in bad taste, and underserving of a human to put up so much airs and have their ego walk around with them.

People complain all around about the attitude of certain celebrities to their fellow men. Many are uppity and arrogant, sneering down their noses at other people without a touch of consideration or courtesy.  That constitutes a problem where non-celebrities are involved, and the tongues start wagging.

Arrogance in celebrities is like bright petals on a nectarless flower. They make them become larger than life and grudgingly desirable. Their respect value rises, and people who have to deal with them on a professional level accord them the most respect and reverence. Simply put, the arrogance breeds an aura of power, which is highly beneficial to the bearer.

Others, like me, nurture the belief that it is good value for a celebrity to have a measure of arrogance, and wear it with pride like some sentimental badge of honour.

Critics who are against the concept of celebrity arrogance have put forward arguments to justify their claim and they seem to enjoy massive sympathizers. They say arrogance puts people off and alienates the celebrity. They declare that an arrogant celebrity will soon meet his end, and will have no friends in their time of calling. They also take it personal, and go steps further, raving bitterly about how it is morally wrong to have pride become a lifestyle.

 

Sorry folks. On the surface, that argument holds water, and I understand how your brain works. But let me delve a bit deeper and point out the flaws of that thought process.

Celebrities are arrogant because they have to be. They don’t know you personally, and they probably never will. To them, you are a statistic, a single digit in the scores of people that make up their fan base. Sure they love the fact that their music and movies give you the most pleasure. And the reason why they love it is selfish; loving their music makes them bigger, and with that status, they command higher fees in all their business dealings.

They need you from afar. They don’t want to get up close and personal with you. That way their world is kept from getting overcrowded and complicated. Arrogance prevents this. In being arrogant, they probably will get on the bad books of a number of people. But that number is negligible to their massive fanbase. You will say if everyone comes together and hate a certain celebrity, then he will fall. How romantic.

 

Bad news for you; no celebrity ever got hated by their fans for arrogance. The moment a new stunning material comes along, all that hatred vanishes into thin air. People are fickle. The times are fickle, and life is too short to hate another person from afar.

Celebrity arrogance is a good thing, as long as they continue to back it with immense talent and flow in the thick of the pop culture tide, then they have leave to become proud. It helps their brand value, does no hurt to them personally, and above all, in Nigerian lingo; it keeps their market selling.

Don’t hate a celebrity for his arrogance. Your hate will be wasted on him. Hate the devil instead, or perhaps, the Nigerian police who are your ‘friends’.

Arrogance in celebrities is a desirable and necessary quality.
