Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on Wednesday, March 30, expressed sadness at the demise of a frontline social crusader, statesman and politician, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite.

In a statement by Yusuph Olaniyonu, his special adviser on media and publicity, Saraki recalled the doggedness and commitment of Dr. Braithwaite to nation building during his lifetime through his many activities and unwavering stance against anti-democratic forces.

“Late Dr. Braithwaite was one of the pillars of our democracy. He was consistent in fighting for rule of law, social justice and equal rights of all Nigerians before the law. He stood  for the truth always and his patriotism knew no bounds. He was an intellectual and respected legal practitioner.

“I still cherish his disposition and blunt views on issues. His contributions to the socio-political development of Nigeria is unparalleled. This is a major loss.

“This is another painful loss to this great country. It is indeed, really disheartening and sad. We shall sorely miss him,” Saraki said.

The Senate President commiserated with the immediate family of the deceased, the government and people of Lagos State  and urged them to take solace in the fact that Braithwaite spent his life in the service of God, country and humanity.

While praying for the repose of the soul of the departed, he called on the Lagos state government to immortalize the late Braithwaite.

Tunji Braithwaite was born in 1933, the youngest son of eight children. He was educated at the prestigious C.M.S Grammar School, entering the school’s Preparatory Section in 1946 and completing his education there in 1953.

He proceeded to sit for his A Levels at the London University at Kennington College in 1955 and enrolled in 1957/58 as a Law student at the Council of Legal Education, London. He was admitted into Lincoln’s Inn that same year and graduated as a barrister in 1960.

He married his childhood sweetheart; Grace S. Falade in 1956 while they were undergraduates. They have 5 children and many grandchildren.
