Vic O: Nigeria has forgotten the clowning rapper

Vic O gave us too much and now he is ordinary. The rapper, who combines a crude and often comical approach to music is no longer a sensation, nor does he inspire us to get into his world any longer.

Vic O gave us too much and now he is ordinary. The rapper, who combines a crude and often comical approach to music is no longer a sensation, nor does he inspire us to get into his world any longer. Even his interpretation of our world has become stale and without verve.

Simply put, we have noved past Vic O.

Last year, Vic O, was a worthy candidate for the Nigerian internet man of the year. He was the country’s darling, who we couldn’t get enough of. His presence was dotted on, his words were considered gold, and even his very laughter had the uncanny ability to make us all scream in delight. Nigeria was in love with Vic O.

But that is no more. These days he is ordinary, lacking in any power to even be a byline in the news. How did he get it wrong? How did Vic O fall from his height of brilliance to this level of inactivity?

The reason is simple. Vic O gave Nigeria too much, until the country had enough.

Last year Vic O made the journey to his home country. He abandoned his diasporic base in Italy, and relocated back home where he waded into the beef between Drake and Meek Mill. His video which shows the burial of both stars, became legend. Not content with that, Vic O began his media touring. Every platform had a unique interview with the rapper, as he toured the length of print, digital and broadcast houses, granting interviews and flooding the market with content.

Gone was the aloof richness that hugged his minimalist days in Italy, where he was beyond our reach. Here was a man, who we picked at will, and he was happy to oblige. With the benefit of hindsight, Vic O’s appeal was also his scarcity. He failed to realize that, leading to his media devaluation.

Vic O also contributed to this. He waded into every beef, and challenged everyone to a duel. This January, he chose Falz as a target, and that made us lose our collective interest. With the spate of attacks he has dished out, and the rampant ambitious and outrageous declarations, Nigeria moved away from him. Our hero has become a pariah. Only Kanye West can rant for so long and still be dope. Vic O is not Kanye West. Never was, never is, and never will be.

How can Vic O regain his palce in our hearts and trends? How can he make the journey back to fame and pop relevance?

For a man who has done just about everything, nothing would suffice. Except he makes the declaration to run for president.

But even that, might not be enough.
